PROFESSIONAL SCORPION CONTROL FOR #CITYFULL PROPERTIES

Scorpions are arachnids that have survived relatively unchanged for hundreds of millions of years, and their survival success is directly attributable to their exceptional adaptability. They can flatten their bodies to fit through gaps as thin as a credit card, survive for months without food, and withstand a wide range of temperature extremes. These characteristics make scorpion control one of the more technically demanding pest management challenges, particularly in structures with older construction featuring numerous gaps and voids that provide ideal shelter.

In Alamance, NC, the most commonly encountered scorpion species that enter structures include the striped bark scorpion and several other regional species depending on geographic location. Unlike venomous spiders that present a risk primarily through accidental contact, scorpions actively move around structures at night in search of prey insects, increasing the probability of contact with bare feet, hands reaching into dark spaces, and clothing or shoes left on the floor overnight. Scorpion stings inside structures typically occur during routine activity rather than through deliberate disturbance, making population control rather than just exclusion the more important management objective.

SCORPION INSPECTION AND UV DETECTION TECHNOLOGY

Scorpions fluoresce brilliantly under ultraviolet light, appearing bright green or blue-green when illuminated with a UV lamp in dark conditions. This characteristic makes UV light inspection an extremely effective tool for locating scorpion populations on exterior surfaces, in landscape features, along foundation perimeters, and inside structures during night inspections. Nordic Pest Control technicians conduct UV light inspections as part of our scorpion assessment protocol, mapping the extent of scorpion activity in and around the structure before designing the treatment program. UV mapping identifies high-density areas where treatment intensity should be concentrated and provides an objective measure of population reduction after treatment is applied.

OUR SCORPION CONTROL APPROACH

Effective scorpion management requires addressing the insects that scorpions feed on alongside the scorpions themselves. Scorpions are predators that colonize areas with abundant prey, which typically means areas with high insect pressure from crickets, beetles, and other arthropods. A general pest reduction program that reduces the insect prey base simultaneously makes the property less attractive to scorpions by removing their primary food resource. This dual approach, treating scorpions directly and reducing the prey population that sustains them, produces more durable results than scorpion-specific treatments alone.

• UV light night inspection to map population locations and concentration areas on the property
• Residual insecticide application to foundation perimeters, rock features, woodpiles, and structural gaps where scorpions shelter
• Dust insecticide applications into void spaces, wall gaps, and attic areas where scorpions rest during daylight hours
• Prey insect reduction program to remove the food resource that attracts and sustains scorpion populations
• Exclusion assessment identifying and sealing structural gaps that allow scorpion entry into living spaces
• Follow-up UV inspection to quantify population reduction and identify any areas requiring retreatment

FREQUENCY AND TIMING OF SCORPION TREATMENTS

Scorpion populations in Alamance, NC peak during warm months when their prey insects are most abundant and when warm soil temperatures support their activity levels. Treatment programs should begin in early spring before populations reach peak levels and should be maintained through late fall when cooling temperatures drive both scorpions and their prey insects to seek shelter. Quarterly service visits aligned with seasonal population peaks provide continuous protection with treatment renewals timed to the residual life of applied products. Properties with historically severe scorpion pressure may benefit from bi-monthly service during the peak activity season.
